Vintage 1940s Japanese Kutani Moriage Dragonware Porcelain Display Plate - Rare Find
£32.00
Add a striking piece of traditional mid-century Japanese craftsmanship to your collection with this stunning, hand-painted Moriage Dragonware display plate. Dating from the 1940s to 1960s export era, this salad or dessert-sized plate features a magnificent, three-dimensional coiled dragon soaring through stylized smoke clouds. The ethereal, gradient-painted blue backdrop perfectly contrasts the intricate, tactile stoneware details. The dragon motif is rendered using traditional Moriage, a highly skilled technique where layers of liquid clay slip are meticulously piped onto the porcelain body before firing to create a raised, highly textured finish. The reverse side bears a crisp, authentic overglaze iron-red square Kutani (九谷) seal mark, translating to "Nine Valleys", the renowned historic ceramic production region in Ishikawa, Japan. It weighs 308g, its measurements are 21.5cm diameter, and 1.5cm height. In excellent vintage condition, no chipping, no cracks, with a exception of a very tiny chip on the rim as seen in the image and reflected in the price. A great addition to your Japanese Art & Craft / Novelty Plates collection. Collectible, Collector's item.
